Theres not much i can say about Abel Ferrara's 1992 badcop/guilt/trippy classic that hasnt been said before, but here i go. Without a doubt this is an art film directed by a grindhouse mastermind as well as a over the top one man show for Harvey Keitel pushed way over the edge. Tho plotwise theres not much going on other then Nun rape and Keitel doing all kinds of Drugs, thats all thats needed. The whole movie is pretty much Harvey Keitel's journey thur a drug fueled week of hell as his gambling and drug issues take control of him, with his only way out being solving a rape case where the victum just happens to be a nun.
The style of the movie is in the form of a art film like i said eariler. But its a art film on crack. The camera goes out of focus many times and lingers around as Harvey does all matters of drugs. It treats everything as real and gritty making it even harder to watch. Such as the scene where Harvey takes heroine or the forced fake blow job scene. It's messy as hell and no where near as smooth or well done as Ferrara's eariler King of New York(1990), which just adds to the under your skin factor.
Acting wise Harvey is at the top of his game here. He goes from shooting a radio to yelling at his kids to slow dancing to having a break downin a church where he yells at jesus. Yet with all that he doesnt go to far over the top and by the end you feel for him and his now doomed life. I think its his best role after Mr white in Reservoir Dogs(1992).
The new dvd for Bad Lieutenant(yellow covered)is a improvement over the old dvd, and it has more bonus features such as a 3 part documentary with interviews with director Abel Ferrara aswell as a commentery with him and the trailer. Well worth the buy for 13 bucks and such a powerful and shocking movie.
