More Blade Runner(1982), soundtrack

Here's the amazing Beautiful Love theme and Blade Runner Blues by Vangelis from the Blade Runner soundtrack

Some of the best movie music ever written, and in my top 3 favorite soundtracks. What a saxophone. Enjoy

50TH POST! Blade Runner(1982)

Feels like yesterday i started this blog, now I'm on post 50. For this post i thought i would pick a special movie to talk about. Everyone has a special movie from there childhood, some may pick Raiders of the lost ark(1981)or Star Wars(1977)(Harrison Ford spells childhood memories). To me its always been Blade Runner.

Blade Runner has been a favorite movie of mine ever sense i saw it at age 11. Seeing this movie for the first time opened my eyes to film as not just entertainment but as a touching art. Every scene left me in amazement from start to finish. Since then its remained a favorite of mine where every time i see it, I found something new to love.

Blade Runner is set in Los Angeles in the year 2019, wheres theres human clone like androids called Replicants. 4 of these replicants have escaped from a mining planet and have returned to earth. One is discovered and murders a human, so the police send in a ex Blade Runner, named Deckard(played by Harrison Ford) to track and kill them. While doing so he meets Rachel(played by Sean Young), a women he soons discovers is a replicant. Once Rachel is told shes a replicant,it destories her frame of mind and makes Deckard question his own like and job.

Meanwhile Roy(played by Rutger Hauer), the leader of the 4 replicants, is trying to find anyway to prolong his life, once he finds out theres a life spand of only a few years on each replicant. He goes thur the city searching for any clue to save him. Little knowing that Deckard is searching for him. As the 3 of them go on, they all soon discover what life means to them.

Blade Runner is a odd bird of a movie. It takes the scifi genre and makes a huge beautiful movie with a little but large at the same time question, What's life about and what makes us human?. It never answers that question, but it leaves you with a numb and at times life changing view of the world. Everything in this movie visual is extremely well detailed, from billboards to ships to little glass cups in Deckards apartment. All this adds to how we view things and how images can stay in are minds, rather it be placed there or is actually remember by us. This is the theme of Blade Runner, without real memories we are not human.

Acting wise everyone is at the top of there game. Harrison Ford, up until this point, got hero types or funny comedic types, With BR he gets a quiet tragic hero, who at the end can't do his job with a clean head. He also gets into action, but unlike Raiders or Star Wars, hes extra human in the fact that during all his chases he either almost dies or gets the shit kicked out of him by one of the replicants.

As Rachel, Sean Young is a mysterious beauty who fits the droid look. Tho at times she plays it cold, she is in the end a tragic soul who you can feel is trying to regain hope in life. Rutger Hauer as Roy is scary at times then playful in the next scene, hes a brave person who wants the longer life span that he deserves. He too is a sad character, who may be powerful and smart but who's still only really a four year old.Edward James Olmos plays a second hand character who we never find out anything about, hes just a odd bystander who adds to the mystery.

In a early role here, Daryl Hannah plays Pris, the love mode of the group. Shes a panther in hiding who can strike at any moment. She and Rutger have many great scenes together, they give off a weird relationship bond that's underscored thur out the movie. Now I'm a huge M. Emmet Walsh fan, in this he has a super small part as a boss for Deckard, but still it's great to see him in anything.

Another thing amazing about Blade Runner is it's music score by Vangelis. It's a great mix of jazz, electric, and classical music. It fits every scene perfectly, with my favorite being the forced love scene between Deckard and Rachel. It takes what could be a dull scene and turns it into film legend.

In many ways, Blade Runner helped start the now famous style of Cyberpunk. The film's views of cities and the style of the characters have been copied countless times for future based novels and other future based movies,as well as many anime movies and shows. To add to the punk feel of it,it's also a neonoir of the best kind. It's a film noir with all the fixings, troubled cop, woman in trouble and a bleak view of the world. All mixed up for one hell of a stunning cocktail.

Blade Runner, all in all is simply a movie, once seen not easily forgotten. It's a breathtaking looking movie that changes how we look at the world and it helps us discover what it is to be human. Easily a masterpiece and should be seen by every movie buff many times.

Thoughts on Caliber 9 (aka:Milano Calibro 9)(1972)

A small time gangster named Ugo(Castone Moschin), is released from a 3 year prison term, only to be framed for stealing 300 grand the same day he's released. The police, mob, and a former associate named Rocco(played by Mario Adorf) are all after what Ugo may or may not know dealing with the missing money and his tie to the mob. Ugo Is forced to re join the mob, and must soon after find a way to get the missing money and keep his life.

Caliber 9 is the first movie in a loosely connected trilogy of films, called the Milieu Trilogy, all directed by Fernando Di Leo. All deal with the Mafia's point of view from the euro crime genre. Much like The dollars trilogy(A fistful of dollars, For A Few Dollars More, and The Good The Bad And The Ugly),the movies aren't really connected by plot, but by the same actors and director.

This was my second Di Leo movie, after The Italian Connection(1972,the second film in the trilogy), and i can already tell he was a master of euro crime movies. His style is very down to earth, with chases, fist fights, and shootouts being brutal without pushing it too far. The movie also has a extra level of sleaze with some of the action scenes, such as the pre credits scene where 3 people are kidnapped and tied up,only moments later being blown up in a small cave. Add to the sleaze it's also well shot with many great shots, from the night club,to the villa shootout, and to Rocco looking thur the handle of the bag with the 300 grand in it.

Cast wise everyone is great in there part. Castone Moschin is a mean number, with is bold head and smokers voice. For most of the movie he's quiet and always in deep thought, trying all he can just to leave the crime world to go straight. Mario Adorf is the perfect Rocco, a sleazy sadistic bastard who at the same time is trustworthy to his boss. Adorf fits the love to hate character mood very well, and at the drop of a hat he could become a bad ass. As Ugo's stripper girlfriend, Barbara Bouchet is sexy and hollow, yet at the same time always seeming to be hiding something.

Along with Di Leo's brutal style, the movie also its well written by Di Leo. Thur out theres lots of dark dry humor and hard boiled dialogue that adds a kick to the movie.Di Leo also adds many twists to the plot to throw off viewers and keep them guessing. Caliber 9 has one of the best 3rd halves ever written for a crime movie, from a great shootout to a bloody apartment fight.

Caliber 9 was one hell of a way to start a trilogy of crime movies. From all the twists to the cast to the great action, I had unbelievable awesome time with this movie. A must see for Euro crime fans.

New Favorite: Le Doulos(1962)

The other day i watched Jean-Pierre Melville's classic french filmnoir Le Doulos(1962). It quickly became a new fave, it's just a super entertaining film full of all a movie buff could want. It's a very smooth and clever movie. Ordering the DVD soon, there might be a review coming for it too.

Check it out asap if you dig Filmnoir.

10 reasons why to love Pineapple Express(2008) ,the movie that is

Back in 2008 i was stunned to find a stoner movie, that could out smoke Up in smoke(1978), and Pineapple Express blow it out of the water big time. I wasn't expecting much from the trailer, but yet another goofy buddy stoner comedy. What i got was a laugh until i die from a heart attack from it's awesomeness.

When i rented it i watched it 7 times in a row. So you know that's a good reason to check it out. Here's a list of why i couldn't get enough of it:

1.The black and white opening scene. with James Remar wearing a eye patch! Also check out the crazy background. (Underwater helmets)

2.Opening credits with Seth Rogen jamming to Electric Avenue by Eddy Grant, while talking about the cons of pot.

3.Bitchy 18 year old high school girlfriends

4.James Franco=greatest stoner since Cheech Martin

5.Rosie Perez as the bad ass dirty cop. Hell you could just watch the movie for her.

6.Craziest soundtrack for a stoner movie.

7.Red the supplier played by Danny McBride and the love for his dead cat and wife in jail!

8.James Franco driving during the car chase!

9.The whole ending shootout. How many gun fights do you normally see in a Field of pot.

10.TIE: Thur out the movie the weed talk and the two hit men send to get Seth and James.

So kick back, pop some corn and enjoy the movie. With or without pot, just if needed and if so get the pineapple.

Thoughts on Kite(1998) -edited cut-

Back a couple years ago i finally got back into anime. As a young kid i was obsessed with anime. Now every kid loves cartoons, but i knew that anime was different. By age 10 or 11 i started to lose interest in anime and switch to other forms of cheap action like Steven Seagal or slashers(i didn't watch my first Van Damme movie til i was 13). After years without it, i finally got hit by the anime bug again. I was watching a episode or movie of Dragon Ball Z on TV( i know I'm a sad soul), and i got such a strange kick out of it. It was so over the top,yet during the quiet parts i saw beauty in the feel of the show.

After checking out many books on anime, i finally made a list of anime movies and shows to watch. One of the first titles was a odd ova(Original video animation),movie named Kite. What made it odd was it was listed twice for 2 different cuts, A unrated cut and a edited r like cut. Luckily I went for the R cut. More on that in a sec.

Kite is about a young female assassin named Sawa. You goes from job to job, given to her by a dirty cop who is her so called guarid. She was recruited when she was young by him after her whole family was murdered. After meeting another young assassin, she starts to question her life.

Kite in plot is like a blend of two of Luc Besson best movies, Leon and Nikita. Like Nikita it's about a female assassin, and like Leon it has a dirty cop and a girl looking for revenge against him for murdering his family. Also like those movies it's thoughtful yet full of gritty action. The shootout in the bathroom almost pushes it a little too far,but it can be forgiven for the awesome payoff.

Drawing wise the movie(or ova),looks great tho at times a little soft. Sawa is a neat character design and most of the other characters look good too.

Now back to the version issue. As it would turn out, the original director cut was a hentai(anime porn). It was some kind of a odd cross over between porn and action. Luckly i stayed with the edited cut, because most of the sex scenes were aimed at young children, so it was a form of kiddie porn! Tho this is a cut version it plays great as a normal action movie, and in truth is one of the better ones ive seen from the anime genre.

Kite is a great action movie in it's cut form, and a great example of anime. The uncut form tho is a strange fit together porn. I'll still with the action movie anyday.

Trailer for a non bs art movie: Blow Up(1968)

Heres a trailer for Michelangelo Antonioni's classic 1966 movie Blow Up, a mystery movie which itself is a mystery. A great film.

Panther Squad(1984) Lighting video vhs

In Panther Squad, Sybil Danning plays a leader of female commandos who must stop a group of terrorists who kidnap a pilot of the latest space flight. The terrorists are doing so because they work for a anti-pollution group, that wants to sabotage the flight.

Panther Squad is another mindless cheap action movie from the 80's. What makes it stand apart from other such fare is how bizarre the plot and the tone of the movie is. From the Terrorists group, that is named Clean Space!, to the poorly done action to the out of control bad editing. And before i forget Sybil Danning with a laser gun!

Cast wise, the 2 stand outs are the star Sybil Danning and Jack Taylor. Sybil is at her dumb sexy best here. She isn't the best leading lady, but i have a soft spot for her as the z grade actress she is. Her leather outfit just has to be seen. Jack plays her boss, in Charlie or M from 007 mode. Thur out he looks super drunk, which i think adds character.

It has to be said that, all in all Panther squad other then its really odd plot and bad acting, is truly bad. It isn't unwatchable bad, just mind numbing bad. Most of this is by way of overed used filler. And by 40 mins in,it gets a little unbearble.

My vhs copy is by Lighting Video, picture is grat for this old of a vhs. Great box art and classic sleaze.

Panther Squad was a odd trip of a flick, but sadly skipable. C.L.E.A.N S.P.A.C.E and sybil with a laser gun saved it in the end.

thoughts on Swamp Women(1956)

NOTE: I borrowed this DVD from a friend.

A new inmate is moved into jail, once there she joins the nardo gang, after meeting the other 3 girls. Soon after they escape prison. During the chase they run into a young couple, who they kidnap while trying to find a bundle of diamonds the gang had stolen and hide in a swamp.

Swamp Women is one of Roger Corman's early movies, and like most of his early fare it's a cheap quickie for a double feature. Knowing that i wasn't really counting on anything amazing from it. To my surprise it was actually one hell of a entertaining movie.

It's the perfect Drive in movie in many ways. It's classic tough dames ready for violence at any time, with plenty of hard boiled talk straight from the period it was made. That's what makes these movies so much fun, i couldn't see this movie being made in the 40's or today,it's a great time capsule.

It being made in the 50's, the level of sleaze is actually higher due to the fact they couldn't really show anything without censor problems. The 4 women of course go for the man in the couple, and the woman is soon killed off.The girlfriend drowns and is never spoken about again. The 4 women sneak to talk to him and that's how the mind games start. For extra sleaze, theres many cat fights thurout. Along with that theres some cheesecake with the bath scenes.

This being a Corman movie theres going to be many cheap movie tricks up his sleeve.Lots of chap sets, stock footage, and plenty of filler. One big trick that stuck out the most was the car chase and prison break. In the car the background is black but it's bright daylight outside, and before they even get into the car, you can hear guards but there never shown.

Swamp Women was just a blast to watch with all of it's hard boiled talk and enough cheese to fill up any bad movie fan. Great early Corman.

Quick thoughts on Black Dragons(1942)

NOTE:I borrowed this DVD. Why he or anyone would buy it is a mystery to me as well.

Bela Lugosi plays a brilliant scientist, who is working for the Nazis and the evil Black Dragon Society. His mission is to transform 6 Japanese conspirators into American leaders, so they can kill the real ones and sabotage the U.S army. Until his soon found out.

That in a nutshell is Black Dragons, a super cheap potboiler from the Early 40's. The only reason for interest in it is because of it starting horror icon Bela Lugosi. During the 40's,poor Bela made many films for the cheap company Monogram, who's source of income were cheap sleazy(at the time)theme movies.Bela is the only real star of the movie, and he does a decent job with the shit script. He gives off the right vibe as a mysterious scientist and seals the part.

The story for the movie sounds great on paper, and in truth isn't that bad, it's just the movie just drags out.The whole movie is dull as dirt, with very little action to keep in moving. The movie is 69 mins long and about 40 mins is filler with many chunks just being people walking around. What action that is in it, is slobby and would be better off left out.

One last bitchy note is the ending of the movie is too rushed compaired too the rest of the movie.Added to that a flashback about Bela's past is shown 5 mins before the end. Just bad timing on there part. At least he was talking about Hilter at one point.

Black Dragons is simply one of Bela's worst movies, and it's for die hard fans only, and maybe even them might hate it.

SHORT SHORT VERSION: THIS MOVIE IS BORING AS HELL, JUST SKIP IT.
