10 Reasons why to love RED(2010)
I was pleasantly surprised by the recently released comic book movie, RED. It was a refreshing goofy and way entaining movie with some of the best work by it's actors who seem to have just as much fun with it as it's viewers. I loved this movie even if it's over the top at parts, but at least it was never boring. Here's 10 reasons to love it:
1.Bruce Willis, Here in one of his better funny roles minus unfunny Tracey Morgan. Still can handle the action and is great with his comedy timing.
2.Karl Urban, great as the CIA badass.
3.Mary Louise Parker, haven't reaily seen her in many movies but she made a good love interest for Bruce Willis.
4. The amazing fight scene between Bruce and Karl. Back in the saddle again.
5.John Malkovich as well, crazy guy by John Malkovich!
6.Helen Mirren as ultra cool foxy old lady packing heat!
7.Bit parts by Richard Dreyfuss and Ernest Borgnine, both get well round characters. Great fun for movie buffs like myself to yell at the screen.
8.Kitchen shootout, Helen at full kickass mode switching machine gun to machine gun.
9.TIE: between The bomb strapped to John and just the action in general. The action is actually Hong Kong style instead of the lame ass shaky camera action that makes viewers go seasick. Great shootouts thurout.
10. Short and simple the money poster shots such as all 3 Main RED males actors in the same shot.

Flintstones on the rocks(2001) lost tv movie
Flintstones on the rocks was a made for TV animated movie for Cartoon Network. It was made in 2001 during its "golden years"(by me at least), it was a undemed to aim the show to older age groups and redefine the series.
The movie deals with Fred and Wilma who are starting to have marriage issues. After the have a major fight, witness by there marriage Psychiatrist, there friend Barney suggests going on a vacation for there second honeymoon. When they get there their misadventures get mixed up with a jewel thief. Thur a bag switch aroo Wilma ends up with the thief's bag. So now the thief is after Wilma and Fred must become a better husband to save the day.
I have to say Ive never reaily been a fan of the Flintstones. But i was surprised at how funny this movie was. For a made for Cartoon Network movie, it was very adult(or at least pg 13). The jokes were more slapstick and wide range. With a couple nods to National Lampoons Vacation(1983).
Another thing that standed out was it's experimenting with the animation and story. One scene involves claymation while bowling. The whole scene is a thrill to watch from start to dinosaur licking ending. Also Thur out the character designs were changed from the original shows designs.
I first show this movie way back in 2001, during a cartoon cartoon show marathon. I recorded it for latter to watch that night. After watching it seven times, and enjoying it each time, i lost the tape somewhere. Recently while moving i found the long lost tape. After some research i found out how rare the movie was and now it's one of my few priced VHS tapes.
Flintstones on the rocks was a joy to watch and actually gets better with multiple viewing. Now that so many DVD companies/studios are releasing archive collection titles, this would be a great movie to realise like that.
Well worth buying if it ever becomes available.

Thoughts on Hustle(1975)
Until a found a copy of this flick at the bottom of the budget DVD shelf at a local used video store, I had never heard of Hustle. I bought because just due the DVD cover alone. It had mid 70's Burt and the french beauty Deneuve, so how could i go wrong.Hustle luckly turned out to be really good and well worth the 3 bucks i spended on it.
Hustle is film about a complex web of guilt, vice, and hidden lies. Everyone in the movie is guilty or hiding something in classic film noir mold. The story centers around the death of a teenage girl found at a local beach. Her father(Ben Johnson) wants answers and attack against anyone who drugged her up or murdered her, even thou the cops keep saying it was a suicide. Burt Reynolds plays the cop on the case, who quickly pins her death to a local business man, played by Eddie Albert. But the case isn't that simple, he soon finds out about a underbelly of vice and corpison all around him.
Hustle is another great neo noir,or new wave film noir. It takes the basic structure of a classic film noir and updates it. Burt plays very much one of those old cop/private eye type you see in all those movie, even to the point where he hides a bottle of bozse in his fileing cabinet. With it also being new wave ish theres many in jokes about older movies. Near the middle of the movie Burt's character says one of his heroes was Bogie. He also brings up Moby Dick many times, and is even watching at one point. Theres even a scene with Burt and his hooker girlfriend(played by Catherine Deneuve) where they go to see a french movie.
For a unknown movie, it sure does have a great cast. Burt is in his star prime still, this was before his downfall in the late 80's. Catherine Deneuve is pitch perfect as the cold yet loving hooker Burt falls for. Ben Johnson is kinda bored thurout, only getting into character during the last 3rd of the movie. Paul Windfield does very well as Burt as by the book partner.Ernest Borgnine has a small role as a sleazy boss of Burt and Paul. The Carrot juice scene is priceless. Eddie Albert has a smaller part as the business man/ xxx movie producer, his good tho he doesn't show up much. At the end of the movie theres a bit part of a robber played by Robert Englund.
Hustle was surpisely good for a cheap 70's Burt Reynolds crime flick. It had alot more to it then i thought it would. Really it's a movie about guilt or finding out how dirty everyone is. By the end everything is fix in this odd cookie cutter plot with everyone needs to get it in the end does. A very good watch.
NOTE: DVD cover very misleading

Electra Glide in Blue(1973) trailer
Having just watched David Lynch's Lost Highway(1996). the image that standed out the most was Robert Blake. Which reminded me of Electra Glide in Blue, a underrated cop thriller starring Blake during his Beretta days.
The movie is a well balance of drama, art house, action and a awesome soundtrack.I'm posting the trailer since i don't own the film yet.

thoughts on The Mercenary(1968 aka Revenge of a gunfighter)
NOTE: This a review of the cut version of the Mercenary(1968). pics are way better then the DVD.
Plot in a nutshell:Franco Nero plays Kowalski a gunfighter who's hired by Paco, played by Tony Musante, to help him a revolution. The two of them become off and on friends, rob banks, cause problems with Ricciolo (Jack Palance), who wants revenge against both of them and fight over the beautiful Columba (Giovanna Ralli).
The movie was directed by Sergio Corbucci, who after Sergio Leone is one the kings of Spaghetti Westerns. He and the cast takes simple story and turns it into a western epic. It shows the rise and fall of a huge Mexican revolution group that quickly goes mad with power. That might sound dark material but Corbucci lightens it with crazy comedy such as falling in mud that leads to a fistfight scene between Nero and Musante. And he also doesn't show the bad side of any downfall it's treated just like a friendly break up.
Corbucci also gives the film a epic feel from how he frames all the shots. He almost reaches Leone territory with many of the shots. Action wise the movie also succeeds. The whole movie is packed with great shootouts and fistfights with Little humor thrown in.
As with all Spaghetti westerns you need good music to play during epic shootouts or standoffs. This movie is no different. Ennio Morricone gives a great score, tho at times it might be a little too Mexican.Trivia note: Quentin Tarantino used L’Arena from The Mercenary score in Kill Bill Volume 2.
Acing wise Franco Nero is great as the hired gunfighter, his smart and has alot of funny moments with escapes and shootouts. Tony Musante is also great. His very calm and he can hold his own against Nero in fistfights and has a charm about himself in shootouts. Sadly Jack Palance isn't given enough to do in the movie. For what little time he does show up he's a very funny bastard of a villain.
Sadly i do not own the uncut DVD of the film. The film hasn't yet been released uncut in wide screen here in the u.s. My copy comes from the 20 wild western pack, that u can find as low as 5 dollars at Walmart or Big lots. It's full screen under the title Revenge of a gunfighter, which has little to do with the plot. Still as it is it's a great movie.
Overall I had a blast with this flick. Franco Nero and Jack Palance are at there best, and the music was great. This one of the best and action packed Spaghetti westerns I've seen in a long time.

Another Random movie music post: High Crime(1973)
Assassination(1987) what a downer
Assassination is a flick I've been looking for awhile, since i first saw it on VHS at a local video store right when DVDs were becoming the new format to watch movies. It was the only Bronson movie at that store i hadn't seen. Shortly after the store closed for good. So it wasn't til i got this 3 pack i finally got a chance to see it. And boy what a waste it was.
Instead of a awesome over the top 80's action fest like Death Wish 3, i got a slow moving sleeping aid. The plot is the same old president(or in this case first lady), trying to live another day while there bodyguard trys all he can to protect him/her.
Simple as that.Unfortunately Everything in this more pretty much sucks. Bronson is reaily showing his age and he barely adds anything to the action scenes. He has a odd relationship with a coworker the goes nowhere, and hes romance with the first lady is nothing but slobby.
The action itself is just as bad. Theres multiple chases that lead nowhere, many of which use painfully different looking stunt doubles. One such scene has Bronson chasing someone and when his shot at, it cuts to a skinny man with black hair that looks nothing like Bronson. The ending boat chase is just as bad, there firing at each other point blank and they still miss.
Another thing about the flick is its over use of comedy that adds nothing to the story other then lightening up the plot for viewers. One that stands out like a sore thumb is the Indian car salesman. There is a main running joke about the first lady's dislike for Bronson. Of couse after a few chases near the end she forgives him.
Assassination couldve been a great trashy action classic, but instead it wanted to be a light hearted pleaser that didn't please at all. Just skip this one.
10 reasons why to love Young Frankenstein(1974)
NOTE: I'm not including punchlines or major jokes, that's a whole other list waiting to happen.
Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein is simply the greatest spoof all time. A film that's just as good as the 1931 original and every bit as memorable. Here's 10 reasons why.
1. Gene Wilder,The only actor who could get away with that much yelling.
2.Marty Feldman playing the best version of Igor of all time.
3.Teri Garr, here in her pre-Mr. Mom days
4.Peter Boyle as the monster/creature
5.Madeline Kahn, words can't do her justice
6.The Fact they got Gene Hackman to play the blind man.
7. The creation of the monster scene, tho theres one in every Frankenstein movie this one reaily stands outs.
8.Tie between: The overacting/comedy timing and Cloris Leachman as Fran Blucher. Whinnying from horses!
9. the musical dance scene to putting on the rittz
10.The father and son relationship between the doctor and the monster. Usually the doctor in these films doesn't like it's creation, so this is a great change of pace.

Stand Alone(1985) -New World vhs-
Here's one of the first New World video VHS tapes i bought for my collection. I got it used for 50 cents. Box is in great shape and the tape is like new. The picture is amazing for a 1986 VHS tape.
The movie itself is a odd find. It's a Walling Tall-ish story of a world war 2 hero who's now in retirement(played by Charles Durning) who after witnesses a brutal crime decides to take justice in his own hands when the cops wont help.
Plot wise it's really run of the mill, But having Durning as the hero makes it special, His a sweet teddy bear grandpa that is suddenly throw into a very violent world. And to me that's what mades it way more enjoyable to watch. Because he's such a loveable character. Pam Grier(of Coffy, Foxy Brown, Jackie Brown and Women in cages fame)also has a great bit part as one of people trying to help Durning out.
Action Is decent if not hit or miss,With the best parts coming at the climax. While near the opening theres some slobby foot chases. The shootouts near the end make up for those shortcomings. All in all Stand Alone is a kinda goofy action movie with a great performance by Charles Durning that makes this tape worth tracking down specially if you can find it for a dollar or under.
Random movie music post: Street Law(1974)
I Love 70's music plain and simple. Classic rock to funk to hell even disco, I just dig the 70's. So being the big film buff i am, i naturally love film music too.
One of my all time favorites is Goodbye my Friend by Guido and Maurizio De Angelis. It comes from the amazing vigilante movie, Street Law(1974) Starring Franco Nero. The track plays Thur out the movie in many different forms, the only thing against it in my opinion is the some times over the top male voices that talk sing. There accents hurt there delivery and make the track kinda goofy.
Also check out Street Law its one of Nero's best movies, and the last 3rd act is one of best finales of any crime film. I might have to review it at a later date.

Thoughts on The Mechanic (1972)
With the remake coming out soon to theaters, I thought i should revisit the 70's hit man classic, The Mechanic. The Mechanic deals with a lonely and cold hit man (played by Charles Bronson), who meets the son of his boss (played by Jan-Michael Vincent). After being bugged by Vincent and becoming Friends with him, Bronson finally agrees to teach him how to be a hit man.
I have to say that The Mechanic is one of the bleakest hit man movies Ive ever seen. From the first image of Bronson in fog, you can tell this isn't going to be your run of the mill cheap action flick. Every scene in the first 2 acts is brooding and dulled down. All the building are old and falling apart, and the sky has a werid haze to it.To add to the feeling of the film, the scpirt is full of scenes of Bronson talking about how everyone is a killer and everyone kills at some point or way. Everything gives it a nightmarish feel.
Acting wise Bronson is extra emotionless in his part as the master hit man. He rarely speaks and its very different then the roles he would get after Death Wish. The way he plays the hit man reminds me of a rougher take on Alain Delon's Jef Costello from the 1967 french classic Le Samourai (which this movie toke chunks of). Like Jef, Bronson's hit man is a cold perfectionist of a killer. He spends most of his time training or walking around by himself, and when he does have human interaction its either him getting paid or paying a lady friend for sex.
Jan-Michael Vincent on the other hand isn't as great. He comes off as way too cocky. Sure the character is but he pushes it a bit. Also his line readings and acting are just as bad, he sounds badly dubbed Thur out. If i had to pick a weakest link about the movie it would be Vincent.
The Action in the movie is really well handled. All the hits in the first 2 acts are awesome. It kinda goes to far in the 3rd with the motorcycle chase and the near ending shootout. There still well handled just over the top to the rest of the film. The training scenes are great and the how to shoot a shotgun the right way scene is one of Vincent's better moments.
The Mechanic is a great piece of 70's action, with one of Bronson's better roles and a great seance of doom thurout.
NOTE: I have the action 3 pack MGM DVD, which also includes Assassination(1987) and Messenger Of Death(1988) A great buy and you can find it for under 10 dollars.
